Front seat: Ek tha (yawn) Tiger

he first day frenzy was unbelievable and unseen in Mumbai multiplexes, the likes of which we have heard, used to happen for Ashok Kumar’s film in the 1950s and in the Eighties for Rajesh Khanna films.
Released on a national holiday, August 15, India’s Independence Day, Salman Khan starrer Ek tha Tiger (ETT) had the looks of a crowd puller extraordinaire. Seventeen shows per day were being screened at most multiplexes totaling 1,250 shows a day in Mumbai alone. It is said that Rs90 ticket were sold by black marketers for Rs750 and for lack of car parking space, genuine ticket holders had to park their cars on the roads and walk to the theatre.

The heavy burden of Rimsha

I recall that my grandmother, when she was still alive, would dutifully sift through the pages of her Urdu newspaper, searching for extracts from the Quran. “It’s very disrespectful” she would somberly remark, before whipping out a pair of scissors and clipping out the offending portion. “Who knows where these papers end up after they’ve been read.”
Painstakingly, she would collect all the myriad papers accumulated at our house which contained fragments of Quranic verse: flyers, newspaper clippings, wedding invitations, and God only knows what else. I don’t precisely recall what ‘respectful’ means she found of disposing of all that material. Perhaps there’s still an unopened drawer somewhere, stuffed with all of it.

What if Music is Banned?

Words of wise men can reveal shadowed truths, as sudden lighting on a dark, starless sky, to a person wading through the deep waters of life in difficult times.

Written two centuries back, about a tumultuous event in Europe, the French Revolution, these words of Dickens: “…we had everything
before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way,” can resonate
familiarly in Pakistan.

“Clubbing”- a Modern Version of “Dogs and Indians Not Allowed”?

Clubs, as they are called, are for the elite. For those who can afford to be members. They should either be able to buy the memberships worth hundreds of thousands of rupees. Or, they should be spoilt rotten by multi-national companies who are willing to give them these memberships as the ultimate status symbols. Depending on the person’s financial standing, he has a membership in the upper rung elite clubs. And even among these elite clubs, there are levels and rankings. To attend the Annual Ball of the top most club, or to be able to mention that “I go to such and such club’s gym” is a social statement in itself. One has to go through a rigorous process of interviews and recommendations and what not to get admitted into these cliques.

PTI Seriously Overrated

ptiA fashion symbol , networking opportunity, safe association & the right thing to do. This is what everyone think about PTI . For me it is a little different . For me it is like an old wine in a new bottle , group of people who never had a political identity in the past , refuge for ousted leaders and just another washing machine of your past political sins. You may differ but this is my opinion and would try to elaborate.

If you can't Marry, don't date

We often fall in love without thinking much about our differences that may result in a sad ending.
Not all love stories have a happy ending, nor can any of us foresee the fate of our love. Ye, I believe that sometimes the actors of the love story are not entirely committed to the beautiful end at all – they have no desire to get married but are just in the relationship to have a good time.
